Five Hours and the Empty Finish Line

Jan 06, 2026

Establishing a boundary of five hours minimum sleep. Reflecting on crossing a finish line alone after recovering from a TBI. Achievement without community celebration still holds value.

Sometimes the victories that matter most are the ones no one else sees. Five hours of sleep isn't ideal, but it's the line I won't cross anymore—the minimum I need to function, to think clearly, to be the person I want to be.

I remember crossing a finish line after my TBI recovery. No crowd. No fanfare. Just me and the empty road behind me. For a moment, I wondered if it counted—if achievement without witnesses really mattered.

It does.

The climb isn't about applause. It's about showing up for yourself, even when—especially when—no one else is watching.

Left foot, right foot. Keep climbing.
